As the owner of an e39 with a Takata airbag from Virginia (used from an 04 X5; replaced after my accident), I’m visiting my dealer today to do a bit more research into the issue.

At what point are Takata just going to recall every airbag they ever made? Seems like it might be easier at this point.

I think it’d be easier to list all the models that aren’t affected.

I had my front passenger side air bag replaced last year - So now I need my driver side replaced too? Fak.

I know. I took my grandmother’s 05 Accord in to get the passenger side one replaced when the recalls first started. A month later, the driver’s side recall was announced. Such a PITA.

The NHTSA recall notice lists affected BMW models and production dates. If you do not know your production date I can get it for you using my account at Russian BMW VIN decoder. I will need the last 7 digits of your VIN. I just found my production date is 2002-02-05, meaning my driver side air bag will more than likely need replaced.

Haha, I love that site! It’s my first bookmark in Google Chrome. Mine was a 2003-03-03 (nice number set!).

I use Safari normally, but Chrome is great because of its automatic translation.

However, you make it a bit more complicated than necessary. Go to RealOEM.com, put in the last 7 digits, and it will show the production date. Or look at the door jamb sticker, though that doesn’t show the exact date (just MM/YY).

The Russian site is great for looking up the original factory options for the car. It’s an interface to the BMW computer database. It also can be inaccurate (in terms of options), especially because the e39s can be upgraded quite a bit from their current spec if the owner is determined enough.

I completely forgot about RealOEM, but yes the Russian site gives the day of manufacture instead of just the month/year.

It may be likely that all airbag inflators will degrade dangerously over time
